Co-operative effort yields results

In the past week it's been much the case of 'Now you see it. Now you don't.'

Most of the car bodies located by REF members during our somewhat washed out Clean Up Australia Day exercise in the wetlands at the end of Duffield Road were removed by the Redcliffe City Council and Peninsula Metal Recyclers. This was part of their commitment to Hays Inlet Awareness Week and World Environment Day.

Today - June 4 - an enthusiastic team of volunteers headed back to the wetlands to complete the task begun in February. Three ute loads of rubbish were removed from the area. Metals, car batteries and tyres were recycled while the rest including the huge load of rotting carpet shown above were consigned to the tip. Shown below with the last load are the volunteers who enjoyed a warm morning in the outdoors. A few even joined David on a brief tour of the mangroves via the sewerage pipes at the end of the day.

The Council and Peninsula Metal Recyclers removed 12 car bodies in the lead-up to the clean up. On the day members of REF, Green Corps, the local Bahai Community and interested locals removed 1.18 tonnes of rubbish. An outstanding feat for which all should be congratulated.

That will set a bench mark for later clean ups.
